Back It Up

I’d planned on doing it for a while now, and I’ve finally backed up all my blog posts onto my PC. Well, Blogger gave me the opportunity to update my blog to a new beta style, so it’s the perfect time to do some housekeeping on here too. The more eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that every post title is a reference to a song or something musical (well, every one apart from the very first post, although that was an audience participation line from a musical) – well I’ve been thinking about it for some time, and I’ve decided to put the inspiration for the title in the post itself. That way not only can I keep track of what songs I’ve referred to in the past, but it also doubles up as a sort of crap guessing game (I’ve put the information at the bottom of each post, so it’ll only be spoiled sooner on shorter posts). I’ve started doing it on all the posts I’ve published today, and I’ll be going back through all my previous posts to update them over the next few days. I’m also going to clean them up a bit – correct some mistakes and fix some broken images – might as well while I’m going through the vaults! So soon this place will be a bit more organised, require less guesswork and should the worst happen not be lost forever!

Until next time – Back To The Future!

Toys, Toys Toys, We Got New Toys

Went shopping with Nikki today – it was a surprise she asked me on Saturday but I was happy she did. Horrible weather initially – sun was shining and blinding me, and I had my coat on to boot! It didn’t last long thankfully. I hope I wasn’t too much of a pain for her – I was very jokey and probably embarrassed her quite a few times, if not made her feel a little bit awkward. I’m still proud of spotting the mannequin ‘Saturday Night’ routine in Evans, and I’m gutted I never got a photo (I felt too embarrassed at the time to take one). How dare she deny my requests for her to buy me a calendar for Xmas – it’s not like I didn’t give her a choice (they were ‘Shayne Ward, ‘Jake Gyllenhaal’ and ‘Nuns Having Fun’ – all sensible options!). Anyway, she went for presents, I went for a torch, and we came back with other stuff instead. I am now the proud owner of a ‘Nightmare Before Xmas’ mug, a ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ mug and glass (yarr!), a torch and a rubber chicken. Sadly the chicken doesn’t have a pulley in the middle, but it does smell like paint and an egg comes out of it’s lower half when squeezed, so it’s not all bad J. I’ve also got a Nemo teddy from ‘Finding Nemo’ – when I get my new bed in my new room in the new year I’ll still probably have no one to share it with, and with the teddy I never will! I must also apologise to the staff in Parchment, the Disney Store and Argos for putting up with me.

Note to self – need to stop using the word ‘fabulous’ so much.

I got a call from Lee too – he wanted to see me and make me smile (no coming up though sadly). I refused as I was still in town at the time, but later asked if he’d pick me up from there when I was done. I still hope he doesn’t think it was too cheeky of me. He gave me a fine demonstration of his lovely new MacBook, complete with dead pixel! I like it (the Mac, not the dead pixel) – it all seems very integrated and polished, and very well thought out. I’m still swaying to Windows Vista though – Mac OS X is all well and good, but Windows is more suited to what I want to do with computers, and if I had a Mac it would be just too limiting for me. But I strongly recommend one for anyone whose needs match their features!

It’s been a long week, with many things happening in work, so now I think I’ll sign off and finish it for good.

Until next time – you never quite know just how useful you’ll find a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle.

When The Lights Go Out

This weekend was the weekend of the power cut.

On Thursday I decided to stay a little late in work – Nikki wanted some warranty information on some equipment, and knowing that it would just be me, Jon and Mr Ed in on Friday (Vicky goes to college) I thought I’d get it out of the way so that I wasn’t rushed the next day. Couldn’t see Ali on my way out so I called her on my way home to find out what time I should get in for in the morning – 8:30am, go figure ;). Little did I know that the fates had already planned that I would miss this appointment – I knew something was strange though when the living room light flickered violently later that evening…

I get woken up around 4am on Friday morning by mother – she’d noticed that the bathroom light had gone out, and didn’t know where my torch was. I used my phone to light the way, and grabbed the torch from downstairs. No problems in the lecky cupboard, in fact even the meter had gone out. I went outside and some of the lampposts were out – got mother to phone Scottish Power and they confirmed that one of our neighbours had just called as well. Had to unplug all my electrical equipment in case there was a surge when they fixed the problem, and stayed up as long as I could keeping mother company, in case they needed access to the property.

I eventually fell asleep and didn’t wake up again in time for work. Why? An unfortunate culmination of events. Firstly, it’s a known fact that if my sleep is interrupted and I go back to sleep, my body seems to forget what sleep it’s already had and starts all over again – I’m difficult to wake at the best of times (and worst – I’ve slept soundly when a brutal thunderstorm was right over our house), but this is an almost impossible situation. My usual combination of phone and alarm clock was impaired as well – my phone’s battery died (I was planning on charging it in the morning) and the alarm clock wasn’t plugged in (it was an expensive alarm clock! I wasn’t going to leave that plugged in!). Surprisingly I did forsee these failing, so I tried using what was left – my Nintendo DS Lite and one of mother’s battery powered alarm clocks. Well, the DS just wasn’t loud enough, and it seems the switch on the alarm clock is faulty and doesn’t always set the alarm to go off! Talk about bad luck! I suppose if I had woken up in time the situation would still have been dire – I would have needed a bath and my clothes ironing, both requiring electricity. Mother did actually wake up before 9am, but as discussed before she couldn’t rouse me, so she called in work and let them know what had happened. Thankfully they were understanding and just said to have the day off (good thing too – I was still knackered when I woke up!). I do feel embarrassed though – I’d had the previous Friday off sick, and now had it off again due to tiredness. But it was an emergency situation I suppose, and had I have woken up I would have went into work. Whether they’ll believe all that happened though is something I’ll find out tomorrow.

It didn’t end there though – Friday night the lights started flickering again, so I went to bed. I just couldn’t be bothered staying up, and the lights scare me when they flicker so badly. Lo and behold, I’m awoken again at 5am by mother – the lecky had gone again. So the process repeated itself, and thankfully they managed to put it back on for 7am. But once again the lights flickered in the morning and at 12pm it was off once more, and didn’t return till 3pm. I’m happy to report it hasn’t gone off again since (well, not when I’ve been awake to notice anyway). It’s interesting though, I remember a while back the lecky went off for a whole day and I was at my wits end with nothing to do – this time round I had my DS, my phone and my Zen, all with long battery lives, and it sure made a difference having them!

It’s not nice when it does happen and it’s easy to get irate at the power companies, but to be fair it doesn’t happen that often, and considering the amount of wires and supply they have to maintain, it’s a wonder it doesn’t happen more. These occurrences also show me just how much I rely on electricity for the majority of things I do, be it direct powered or from a battery, and how much my activities are affected when that power is gone.

Until next time – buy solar panels and set up your own wind farm – erecting a waterwheel wouldn’t hurt either!

It's Been A Bad Day

Please Jon, don’t take a picture.

Well, my first post in a few months and I’m going to moan – how apt. But today took the cake in its attempts to defeat me, and I’m glad it’s now Wednesday, and hopefully a brighter day (not in terms of weather, mind).

It started out bad – got up late, so my morning was spent rushing round, didn’t get a chance to do any of the things I had planned. I get to work and things aren’t so bad, that is until 9am. For the past week I’ve been in two-minds about getting the new Nintendo Wii, and Amazon UK said they were going to sell as preorders what consoles they currently know they’ve been allocated, started from 9am on Tuesday. I told my desk colleagues I wouldn’t be taking calls at this time, and proceeded to check the site. Nothing except the same message stating that preorders would start soon. I couldn’t stay off the phone all day, who knew what time they’d start, so I put my phone back on and began taking calls again. It was around 9:30am that the page changed to say I’d missed out – seriously, they must have been up for around 1 minute, I was still refreshing constantly.

That made me feel down for a while, but I got over it. There’ll be more, and it means I might be able to get more work done on my new room this Xmas. The calls I got all day though seemed to just be going nowhere though – normally I feel like they’re getting done and this gives me a sense of achievement, but days like this really drag me down. Don’t get me wrong, I resolved my fair share of calls with a smile, and think I might have gotten a good survey result from one caller – I’ll have to check tomorrow – but the day just plodded along regardless. It didn’t help that Jon was taking snappy snap photos – just what I needed today, a reminder that I’m an unphotogenic tub o’ lard. Well, there are plans for that, but that’s a post for another day.

Lunch was a bust as well – not the company, Nikki was great as usual, but the food we got from ASDA was frozen! Got it swapped for regular sandwiches, but that’s not good food standards! Where is our Subway, Huyton Village? Mustn’t forget the racing bint women who thought it’d be a great idea to go side-by-side down an aisle with a trolley each – absolute genius ladies, kudos to you. Not even the wet, windy and cold weather made me chirpy – and to top it off some people seemed to be enjoying themselves when travelling in it!

The evening wasn’t too great either – Lady Ellis reminded me that I hadn’t posted comments on his blog lately – thankfully I can say I’ve done it now, and commented on Darren’s now too, but it’s no consolation – I was late. I cannot be forgiven.

I just thought I’d check my horoscope to see what it had in store for me today…

Get ready to take advantage of your boundless energy today.
Did I miss taking an energy pill or something? This just didn’t relate at all.

If you're looking for a romantic partner, your physical appearance will get you a lot of positive attention. Don't be bashful -- be proud of who you are and strut your stuff!
Oh now you’re just mocking me. I don’t take you too seriously, just as a bit of fun, but you have really crossed me this time Mr Horoscope!

After that I have to see tomorrows…

People will want to be as close to you as you let them, so try to take advantage of the closeness.
Well, anyone who knows me even the slightest will know this will be very out of character for me!

Barriers between you and someone you know in an official or professional capacity are coming down, and you will get a nice glimpse of this person's great big heart.
Hmm, I’m intrigued, and actually quite looking forward to tomorrow now! I wonder who it could be? And is ‘heart’ literal (hopefully not) or something else?

Until next time – Life’s a piece of shit, when you look at it.
